Commentary: State should require AANHPI history be part of curriculum

The new Congress and the Trump administration have not been shy about their plans for our nation’s schools. At the federal level, they are already looking at dismantling the Department of Education, and Project 2025 clearly highlighted an opposition to diversity and inclusion. These proposals, however, build on other efforts to weaken the quality of education that students like me receive, including recent moves to ban books about communities of color and LGBTQ people, prioritize “patriotic” portrayals of American history, and insert the Bible or the Ten Commandments into every educational setting.

Despite these plans, however, control over education ultimately remains in state and local hands. For New Yorkers, that’s good news; we know that curricula and school policies that reflect our state’s diverse population are important........
