Churchill: New York Democrats say democracy can wait
New York’s Democrats are weighing whether to push back the date of a special election to fill Elise Stefanik’s congressional seat when she leaves to be ambassador to the United Nations.
ALBANY — If the state Democratic Party were wiser, it would be mulling the recent presidential election and wondering why so many New York voters shifted toward Donald Trump or just didn’t vote.
Democrats might also be considering why, in a state presumed to be deep blue, a Republican allied with Trump came within six percentage points of upsetting Gov. Kathy Hochul in the 2022 governor’s race. Indeed, a better Democratic Party would find both elections reasons for humility, grace and reflection.

Alas, there’s little evidence many in the party are taking lessons from recent elections to heart. Instead, its leaders in New York are playing games.
