As the state Department of Environmental Conservation continues to weigh permit renewals for Seneca Meadows landfill in the Finger Lakes, I urge regulators to keep an important distinction in mind: The demand for closure of the landfill should not be confused with environmental stewardship — because in truth, Seneca Meadows is not the problem.
The state’s largest landfill is attempting to provide a solution to an overwhelming challenge that is being ignored: We make too much trash.
