New Delhi: It is the first Monday after the Narendra Modi government was forced to eat crow, with unrelenting youth protests dragging the education minister out of office and forcing a resignation.

Modi government’s two ministerial emissaries assured the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), of no legal or police action against protestors, and that was the commitment that ended protests after Dharmendra Pradhan’s departure was forced.

But all day, there have been many reports of police booking and harassing protestors, non-cancellation of FIRs already filed and also a drive to clear the online space of any traces of the Jantar Mantar uprising that had the government firmly on the mat, perhaps for the first time in 12 years.

Ashutosh Ranka, a spokesperson for the CJP, a group that emerged from an online satirical meme, issued an ultimatum saying that if the government doesn’t sign the agreement by tomorrow stating no action would be taken against the protestors then they will launch a “strong protest”. 

“Reports coming in over the past two days from Bihar, West Bengal, parts of Assam, and Delhi indicate that protesters are being detained, arrested, and charged under serious legal provisions. We want to state very clearly to the government: honour your agreement. If an agreement made by a Union Minister holds no value, then I do not believe the words of anyone in the government carry any value,” he told news agency PTI.

Ranka added, “You had asked for time until tomorrow, Tuesday, to send us the written agreement. So please sign and provide the agreement by tomorrow. If these demands are not met, we will once again launch a strong protest and will not allow our protesters and supporters to be harassed in this manner.”

Earlier in the day, Ranka put out a public statement addressing the two ministers with whom they had three meetings.

“We are observing a complete breach of the agreement regarding no police action against the protestors. Hundreds of students have been arrested in Bihar and Bengal, and hundreds are being surveilled/harassed in Delhi and other states. Multiple reports are emerging in Delhi around detention of volunteers supporting protestors with logistics,” Ranka wrote.

The party has threatened a revival of the sit-in if the government does not do as it promised the movement.

“We demand that all the FIRs against the protestors be immediately withdrawn, students be released and no future FIRs be filed (in line with our agreement) by Delhi police / Central investigative agencies / Police in BJP-allied states, FAILING WHICH WE WILL BE FORCED TO SIT ON PROTEST AGAIN. We also demand that the written agreement around legal cases be shared with us by tomorrow, the aligned timelines with the Government of India.”
