Entering the Desert: The Ramon Crater and the Road South

In a world that moves too quickly, true luxury has become something quieter than lavishness. It is space. It is the rare chance to slow the body, soften the mind, breathe deeply, and return to yourself.

Our family’s journey to the southern edge of Israel began with that exact intention. We were heading toward Eilat and the Southern Arava, where the desert’s stark beauty meets the healing calm of the Red Sea. Along the way, we found a region shaped by generous hospitality, ancient memory, sustainable vision, and landscapes that seem to invite a more grounded pace.

We began with a mindful pause, exactly midway from Sderot to Eilat, at the edge of the Ramon Crater, stopping for a quiet family lunch overlooking its vast, lunar-like expanse. Standing there, above a geological canvas carved over millions of years by wind and water, immediately changed the rhythm of the day. The crater has a way of widening your perspective. It slows the inner clock.

As we continued south, winding through the serpentine roads that descend into the heart of the crater, the open road carried us toward the Arava and Eilat. The desert called us to stop once more at the colorful rocky sand hills, one of those simple, tactile places that becomes magical with children. For half an hour, we ran our hands through shifting shades of ochre, red, gold, and terracotta. No screens, no rush, no distractions. Just the quiet pleasure of touching the earth and watching the colors change in the light.

That short stop became the perfect emotional transition into a weekend devoted to healing, presence, and wellness.
