The Greater Good

I walked in the door just as she began to lose consciousness and slip away from us. She was pale, clammy, and cold to the touch. Her pulse was racing and her blood pressure was plummeting. There was blood everywhere.

I received the call while praying in beit knesset: a woman having contractions, ten minutes away. I left my beautiful daughters praying and ran. While en route, another call came in: miscarriage, heavy bleeding, Mobile Intensive Care Unit had been dispatched. The first call was urgent. This one was an emergency and closer. I swung my little Toyota around and headed towards the bleeding.

When I arrived, the team was attempting to establish IV access. I placed a large-bore IV, started fluids, and administered medications. Around me were an anesthesiologist, a gynecologist, medics, and other responders who, like me, had left their beit knesset and their prayers when the call came. We huddled around the bleeding woman, the men in their bright white kittels and me in my long white dress. Together, we gave medications and fluids, and worked to stop the bleeding, and stabilize her. Slowly, she came back to us. By the time she was transferred to the ambulance, she was stable, alert, and........
