Giving to Bigotry no Sanction and to Persecution no Assistance
George Washington in 1790, quoting Newport’s Rabbi Moses Seixas, told Jews that the United States would give to bigotry no sanction and to persecution no assistance. Expressing in that era such an admirable sentiment surely was audacious, now everywhere more honored in the breach than by observance, and encountering each day increased resistance.
