Treasure Trove: A Century of Israeli Beer – Mi’Brador l’Dor

100 years ago, the Rosenberg Brothers were brewing “Max Brau” Palestinian beer in Acre.  This advertisement appeared in a 1926 edition of Palestine & Near East Economic Magazine- “A Fortnightly for Trade, Industry & Agriculture.”

The advertisement promotes the fact that the beer is made only from the “renowned El Kabri springs” which is located 12.5 kilometres northeast of Acre.   Ancient aqueducts (supplemented by two additional canals which were built in 1800 and 1814) supplied water from these springs to Acre.

“Max Brau” beer started the Palestinian beer industry although the idea of brewing beer in the Land of Israel started fermenting as early as 1922 when Nahum Tisch, the secretary of trade and industry of the Zionist Executive in the Land of Israel, advocated for the........
