Ashes player ratings: The Australian trio who should be nervous after Bazballers finally deliver

England have finally won an Ashes Test in Australia – and it only took another two-day Test for the “Bazballers” to shine and secure a famous MCG victory.

Australia have the series already won, but a growing number of players are suddenly looking over their shoulders.

Here’s how we rated every player in a Boxing Day Test that had to be seen to be believed.

Travis Head:
Made up for his ugly chop-on to Gus Atkinson with a second-innings 46 worth at least twice as many on this pitch. Scored almost half those runs behind the wicket and, as is his wont when the ball is moving, upped the ante before inevitably copping a delivery with his name on it. Has ridden his luck at times this summer and sits comfortably atop the series aggregates (437 runs at 54) as a result. 7

Jake Weatherald: Should get another chance in Sydney, but all bets are off after twin failures. England have noted Weatherald’s habit of falling over to the off side when he jumps onto the front foot, with his first-innings feather down the leg side a tad unlucky, but also a product of that technical fault. An ill-advised leave to Ben Stokes points to an opener down on confidence and second-guessing accordingly. 2

Marnus Labuschagne: Wore a couple of day-two deliveries before edging Josh Tongue to Joe Root, tossing his toys just a bit as the third umpire ruled the low catch had carried. His first innings ended in the same fashion when he was suckered into an uppish drive, and he would be under more pressure if someone were banging the door down to Australia’s top six. After back-to-back 50s, his last five innings have yielded just 49 runs. 2

Steve Smith: A rare loose drive to what was a wonderful seaming delivery from Tongue cost him on day one. Marshalled Australia well again in the field on day one before shifting his set-up significantly in the second dig to counter the seaming conditions.........
