Record power demand and how Delhi met it
On 29 June 2026, at precisely 3.17 pm, Delhi achieved a milestone that deserves to b e remembered as more than just a number. The State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) recorded the capital’s highest-ever electricity demand of 8,748 MW, making it not only the highest peak of the current financial year but also the highest demand ever served in Delhi’s history. Peak demand is the highest amount of electricity a city requires at a particular moment.
Unlike average consumption, this is the period when millions of air- conditioners, coolers and refrigerators operate simultaneously alongside hospitals, Metro services, industries, commercial establishments, water supply systems and data centres. Any power system must be designed not for an average day but for these few critical hours. For years, Delhiites associated record electricity demand with power cuts, overloaded transformers and prolonged outages. Every new peak was accompanied by apprehension that the distribution system would fail under pressure.
It is equally important to understand that record demand can only be achieved when the system is capable of supplying it. If the network collapses or load shedding is imposed, actual demand remains hidden because consumers are denied the electricity they need. In that sense, the figure of 8,748 MW represents not merely growing demand but Delhi’s enhanced capability to serve it. The contrast between then and now is telling. On 19 June 2024, when Delhi experienced what was then its record demand, several parts of the city witnessed disruptions precisely during the period of maximum stress.
In the BSES Yamuna area, an 11 KV cable fault at Karawal Nagar and a failed distribution transformer near Mandoli affected more than 4,400 consumers, with restoration taking nearly an hour. In Tata Power-DDL’s jurisdiction, multiple faults including a snapped conductor, a burnt low-tension cable and a tree-related disruption left another 2,000 consumers without electricity.
