Putin suggested that peace could not be considered until Russia had fully captured Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, four partially-occupied Ukrainian provinces in the country’s east.

The Russian Army will aim to fully capture four Ukrainian provinces before any peace agreement can be considered, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin—pouring cold water on hopes that the Kremlin could agree to freeze the Ukraine War along existing battle lines.

The Russian leader’s remarks come at a point in time when Ukraine is attempting to reclaim the operational initiative with sustained long-range strikes across Russia.
