NATO Could Cancel Future Annual Summits After Trump Spat

NATO summits did not take place every year until Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and might not need to do so in the future.

NATO member Turkey is scheduled to host the next NATO Summit, which is slated to take place from July 7–8 at the Beştepe Presidential Compound (T.C. Cumhurbaşkanlığı Külliyesi) in Ankara.

Although it is almost certain this year’s summit will go on as planned, NATO members may opt to forgo the annual event in the future, Reuters first reported on Monday, citing six sources.

The recent practice of an annual meeting of member leadership only began after Russia launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

“The frequency of NATO summits has varied over the alliance’s 77-year history, but its leaders have met every summer since 2021,” Reuters explained. In the years since the war, a number of senior European leaders have called for the tempo of meetings to slow down.
