Joint Base Charleston will likely be redubbed “Joint Base Lindsey Graham” after the late South Carolina senator, who served in the Air Force and Air National Guard for 33 years.

Over the past several years, the United States military has undertaken the repeated renaming of multiple military facilities. Under the Biden administration, it changed the names of bases that had honored Confederate generals; under Trump, the bases were renamed for servicemembers who shared surnames with the former Confederate leaders, effectively restoring the old names. For instance, Fort Bragg in North Carolina was named for Confederate general Braxton Bragg from its establishment in 1918 until 2023, then renamed “Fort Liberty” from 2023 to 2025, then renamed yet again for World War II Army paratrooper Roland Bragg. The name games reportedly cost taxpayers billions of dollars, irking some lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
