There have been many crises in this region in the past, including sharp internal conflicts. For example, the Iran-Iraq War of 1980, which dragged on until 1988, sucked all the Arab states into the side of Saddam Hussein, thus creating an edge between the Arab and Iranian sides of the Gulf. Secondly, from June 2017 until January 2021, Qatar faced a blockade by Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain, which cut diplomatic, trade and transport ties with Qatar, sealed its only land border and restricted its use of regional airspace and sea routes. Iran and Turkey helped Qatar break this blockade by providing military, logistical and economic assistance. Similarly, in 2014, when the Yemeni Houthis captured the capital city of Sana and overthrew the government, a Saudi Arabian and UAE-led military coalition launched a massive intervention and requested other major regional countries and Pakistan to send their troops, a request which Pakistan’s parliament, through a unanimous resolution, declined.
