Only biological female athletes whose gender has been determined by a one-time gene screening test will now be eligible to take part in the female category at Olympic events, the International Olympic Committee said on Thursday. This follows years of fierce debate over the participation of transgender athletes in female sports across the world, as well as an 18-month consultation period undertaken by the committee itself. This decision has been a long time coming, and it is hoped that, with the matter now settled, the ruling will extend across other sporting institutions to ensure fairness and gender representation.
Police welfare top priority: IGP
The move to normalise transgender individuals as their chosen gender has accelerated across the world, with refusal to recognise that identity increasingly considered discriminatory across many Western states. But when it comes to sports, this logic breaks down completely. There is an absolute world of difference between the physical development of somebody who grew up male and later transitioned to female, and somebody who grew up female.
Biology cannot be argued with. Transgender female athletes who have grown up male benefit from denser bone structure, greater muscle mass, higher strength levels, and increased testosterone production, all of which can allow them to overmatch biologically female competitors. This, in effect, is comparable to a man competing in female sports.

As seen across multiple categories globally, this creates an uneven playing field, undermining biological female athletes who have trained for years to reach the pinnacle of their sport, only to be surpassed by competitors with inherent physiological advantages. In much the same way that the world regulates performance-enhancing drugs to preserve fairness, restricting participation in female categories on biological grounds is presented as another step towards maintaining a level playing field.
