Mourn the loss, reject the violence
The assassination of Charlie Kirk is a tragedy for our country and a warning about the danger of political violence. No matter the target, violence threatens everyone and weakens our democracy.
History shows this clearly. When Julius Caesar was killed in 44 B.C., his assassins believed they were saving the Roman Republic. Instead, they deepened divisions, sparked civil war and cleared the way for an emperor. Violence did not restore liberty, it destroyed it.
America should not repeat that mistake. The investigation into Kirk’s death must be transparent so the public can trust the outcome. Leaders across the political spectrum must speak with one voice: Violence has no place in our politics.
If this tragedy is turned into a weapon for partisan gain or retaliation, the danger is that violence becomes part of our political life. That would erode both freedom and trust in our institutions.
This moment should remind us of a basic truth: Ideas, not bullets, must decide our future. We can mourn, seek justice and still hold firmly to peaceful democratic debate.
