EDITORIAL: Report highlights need for more transparency
When you file a Freedom of Information Law request with a state government agency, you would expect that if they were each following the law, the amount of time they each take and the extent to which they respond to your requests would be about the same.
But the reality is that how well a government responds depends on which government agency is responding.
The good government group Reinvent Albany earlier this month released a report entitled, “Listening to FOIL 2025: Lessons from 11 New York State Agencies,” in which it sought to find out how well the state’s Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) was working.
The report contains an analysis of 16,000 FOIL requests made in 2024 to 11 state agencies.
