EDITORIAL: Lawmakers need more control over utility rate hikes
One of the factors often cited for New Yorkers’ dissatisfaction with living in the state is the high cost of utilities.
Rate hikes for utilities are approved by the Public Service Commission (PSC), which is made up of seven commissioners from business and industry who are appointed by the governor and approved by the state Senate.
As an appointed body, the commissioners have no role in legislative policy and are isolated from public accountability.
That leaves a degree of separation between the decision-makers and the people’s representatives in a review process that directly affects every resident and business in the state.
Given the impact that utility rates have on people’s ability and desire to reside in New York, it’s a matter of common sense that elected state officials........
