EDITORIAL: Expand AG’s powers to pursue deceptive business practices
When it comes to protecting New Yorkers from misleading, unfair and predatory business practices, the state’s top law enforcement officer shouldn’t be hamstrung by the state’s own laws.
Especially in the wake of the federal government rolling back consumer protections (such as by significantly weakening the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau), and given the limits of state consumer protection court rulings to matters that are “consumer-oriented” in nature and that affect “the public at large,” it’s vital that lawmakers extend more power to the attorney general to investigate and prosecute a broader array of deceptive........
