EDITORIAL: Boost penalties for driving with a suspended or revoked license

We all know the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

But the risk is compounded by a factor that doesn’t involve the driver’s reactions behind the wheel. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about one-third of the nation’s 1.5 million drunk driving arrests each year involve a repeat offender.

According to the NHTSA, the risk of being involved in an alcohol-related crash increases by about 24% after a first offense, 36% for a second offense and 51% for a third offense.

The more people are allowed to drive after convictions, the more dangerous they become.

That’s the impetus behind the state Department of Motor Vehicles’ new policy........
