EDITORIAL: Boost penalties for driving with a suspended or revoked license
We all know the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
But the risk is compounded by a factor that doesn’t involve the driver’s reactions behind the wheel. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about one-third of the nation’s 1.5 million drunk driving arrests each year involve a repeat offender.
According to the NHTSA, the risk of being involved in an alcohol-related crash increases by about 24% after a first offense, 36% for a second offense and 51% for a third offense.
The more people are allowed to drive after convictions, the more dangerous they become.
