EDITORIAL: Bill would help get more drugged drivers off the road
There are several accurate ways for police to determine whether someone has been breaking the law by driving under the influence of alcohol.
It’s easy to identify alcohol as a source of intoxication, and mobile breath-analyzers and blood draws can accurately pinpoint the amount of alcohol in a driver’s system at the time of arrest.
But it’s nowhere nearly as easy for police to specifically measure a driver’s level of impairment or intoxication based on drugs, or even to identify the specific drug the driver was using.
With an ever-changing number of synthetic drugs and with people getting high on household products in addition to more traditional substances, New York’s laws haven’t kept up.
