LG Ladakh launches Indus River Green Corridor
Leh: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena today launched the Indus River Green Corridor Eco-Restoration Plantation at Spituk Pharka, aimed at restoring the ecological integrity of the Indus riverbanks and creating green buffers in Leh-Ladakh’s fragile desert landscape. The initiative is described as a unique Cold Desert River Bank Restoration Project in India.
Nearly 1000 saplings of indigenous species such as Oleaster, Sea buckthorn, Indian Willow, Black Poplar, and White Willow were planted on one hectare of land along the riverbank, with contributions from civil administration, defence forces, police, and local communities, including Spituk Monastery. Additionally, 1000 Cherry Blossom and Apricot saplings were planted along roads in Leh to enhance the city’s green cover.
The event, organised by the Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment in collaboration with Spituk Monastery and the University of Ladakh, saw participation from officials, defence personnel, and students.
Describing the initiative as a major step towards sustainable development, the Lieutenant Governor emphasised its role in improving Ladakh’s ecological balance, biodiversity, and resilience. He highlighted the importance of community participation and appreciated the monastery for donating land for the project.
Calling it a “civilisational project,” he said the initiative aims to restore the ecological integrity of the Indus River while balancing development and conservation. He also stressed the need to increase Ladakh’s forest cover—from less than 1 percent to 5 percent in the next two years—and highlighted scientific benefits such as reduced soil erosion, improved microclimate, and increased oxygen levels.
The Lieutenant Governor also underlined the use of innovative irrigation techniques and encouraged youth participation in environmental conservation. He reiterated the vision of transforming Ladakh into a leading global tourist destination through sustainable practices.
On the occasion, a special postal cover was released, and individuals and organisations contributing to environmental conservation were felicitated.
