Hooray! The DUP has finally embraced the spirit of Irish revolution

IT may have come late in the day, but surely it’s something to celebrate that the DUP has finally seen the light and is sinking money into projects celebrating Irish revolutionaries who bloodied Britain’s nose and deprived a monarch of his lands.

Who’d have thought it: Gordon Lyons as one of the brothers of the revolution, siding with insurgents, championing the anti-monarchy cause and hailing the end of British rule in one of its colonies.

Gordon the republican hero, stand back and be amazed. There’s a new superhero in town.

Next thing you know, he’ll be getting a tattoo of Nelson Mandela on his manly chest, speaking out against Israeli war crimes in the Middle East, and hosting a conference exploring the continuing influence of Wolfe Tone on contemporary politics.

Stranger things have happened. Move over Wallace Thompson, there’s a new kid on the block.

We know DUP members are slow learners. In spite of the evidence, they cleave to the mistaken belief that this part of Ireland is better off being part of the United Kingdom.
