SOME politicians and journalists have portrayed the row over the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine as an argument over who should decide where health services are located – elected representatives or medical experts.

That misunderstands this story. The experts – clinicians and health managers – have a strong opinion and want to be heeded, but they are clear that politicians should make the decision.

Last week, general surgeons in the Northern Trust wrote to UUP leader Jon Burrows and former health minister Mike Nesbitt explaining why they believe emergency general surgery must move to Antrim.

They asked their professional bodies across the UK and Ireland to do the same.

While both letters make their case forcefully, they also make a point of acknowledging the decision must be democratically accountable.

The surgeons’ letter adds that they “fully respect the role of elected representatives” in advocating for the concerns of people in Coleraine.

What is truly frustrating the experts is the lack of a decision.

Mr Nesbitt had not signed off the move to Antrim and it is only too likely his replacement, Robbie Butler, will leave the matter on his desk until next May’s election.
