In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R Covey, habit number seven is ‘Sharpen the Saw’.
Its premise is that if you ply too hard at one thing all the time (eg cutting down a tree feverishly, with no time to stop and sharpen the saw), you will take longer to complete it.
When Fionnuala goes by the living room and I’m lying up watching Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, and she mutters “Am I the only one actually does any work around here?”, “Sharpen your saw,” I will cry and her sweet face will peep in: “I’ll sharpen your saw if you don’t watch.”
Yet this what she suggested I do when I told her about Genghis and McGowan’s fishing trip.
