Israeli ambassador to US points to ‘potential’ for ‘continued talks’ with Iran

Michael Leiter, the Israeli ambassador to the U.S., said Sunday that there could be a “potential” for “continued talks” with Iran about the U.S.-Israeli conflict against the country after Vice President Vance said no progress was made in the direction of a peace agreement in recent negotiations.

“When you said the talks are still going on, are there — is there any level of U.S.-Iran contact at this point?” CBS News’s Margaret Brennan asked Leiter on “Face the Nation.”

“Well, you know, the president gave the issue two weeks,” Leiter said, referring to a recent ceasefire.

“Yeah,” Brennan responded.

“And we’re just into the end of the first week, so there is another week left for the potential for continued talks,” Leiter said.

Following a marathon day of negotiations with Iran, Vance said Saturday that no progress was made in the direction of a peace agreement. The vice president referred to the 21 hours of negotiations with the Iranian delegation as “substantive.”

“That’s the good news,” Vance said. “The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement, and I think that’s bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America. So, we go back to the United States having not come to an agreement.”

The U.S. conflict with Iran has stretched to around a month and a half, with recent polling showing Americans dissatisfied with the fighting. The U.S.’s entrance into the conflict followed many other notable foreign policy moves by the Trump administration during the president’s second term.

On Sunday, Trump announced that the U.S. military would start blockading ships looking to enter the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that is key to the oil industry and now central to the conflict between the two countries.

“Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said on Truth Social.
