Trump, Senate ramp up pressure on the House to pass housing bill
President Trump and Senate Republicans are intensifying pressure on the House to pass a housing bill that has stalled for months amid opposition from hard-line conservatives.
The legislation, known as the “21st Century ROAD to Housing Act,” has emerged as a key part of Republicans’ broader push to convince voters they are tackling affordability issues amid the 2026 midterm election cycle.
The measure would approve incentives to build new homes, establish a program to convert abandoned buildings into housing developments and authorize new grants to modernize existing homes, among other affordability priorities.
Although the Senate passed the bill in March with a bipartisan 89-10 vote, it has run into resistance from conservatives in the lower chamber. They object to provisions that include a temporary ban on the creation of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) through 2030 and a requirement that large institutional investors of build-to-rent single-family homes sell those properties within seven years.
House Financial Services Committee Chair French Hill (R-Ark.) and ranking member Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) had been negotiating changes to the bill. But Trump, in a Truth Social post Monday, urged Congress to pass the Senate measure.
