Astronaut Mike Fincke reveals he was crew member with medical issue
(NewsNation) — Astronaut Mike Fincke revealed that he had a medical event that caused the early return of the International Space Station’s (ISS) Crew-11.
The mission included fellow NASA astronaut Zena Cardman, Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Kimiya Yui and Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Platonov, along with Fincke.
Fincke said that he experienced a medical event while on board the ISS and was stabilized by his crewmates, working with guidance from NASA flight surgeons.
NASA determined the safest course of action was to bring the crew home early, with the team leaving after five and a half months in space and splashing down on Earth on Jan. 15.
At the time of the return, NASA did not release any information on what medical event caused the change in plans or which astronaut was affected for privacy reasons.
Fincke clarified the situation was not a medical emergency but said that it was deemed best for him to return to Earth to take advantage of advanced medical imaging not accessible on the ISS.
“I’m doing very well and continuing standard post-flight reconditioning at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. Spaceflight is an incredible privilege, and sometimes it reminds us just how human we are,” Fincke said. “Thank you all for your support.”
Fincke did not share details about the nature of his medical event.
