Dart defends Trump rally appearance amid backlash: ‘I’ve always loved this country’
New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart on Friday defended a recent appearance at a New York rally where he introduced President Trump, saying he acted out of patriotism, not partisanship.
“Obviously, this was a unique opportunity. Being asked and given the opportunity to introduce the President of the United States, my thinking was pretty simple, in the fact of, I’ve always loved this country,” Dart told reporters. “I have extended family members who have fought in wars. I have two uncles who have retired from the Air Force Academy and served themselves.”
“I even have a great-grandfather who served as the Secretary of the Treasury at some point,” he continued. “The president position has always been a position that I have a lot of respect in, regardless of political affiliation, regardless of political party.”
Dart added, “My intentions were just that.”
His appearance at the May 22 rally, led by Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), sparked criticism from some commentators and prompted discussion within the Giants locker room, thrusting the young quarterback into a national debate over the intersection of sports and politics.
