Georgia teacher dies in toilet paper prank gone wrong, police say
(NewsNation) — A teacher in Georgia died during a toilet paper prank after being run over by a vehicle, authorities said.
Hall County Sheriff officials said Jason Hughes noticed a group of teenagers toilet-papering the trees outside his home. After Hughes came out of the house, the group got into two vehicles to leave.
As one of the teens began driving, Hughes tripped and fell into the road and was run over by one of the vehicles.
The teens stopped and attempted to render aid while help responded. Hughes died at the hospital, according to authorities.
The driver, Jayden Ryan Wallace, was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving, along with criminal trespass and littering on private property. Four other teens were also arrested and charged with criminal trespass and littering on private property.
Hughes’ wife Laura Hughes, in a statement obtained by The New York Times, has since said that their family does not want the teens to be prosecuted. She also claimed that Hughes loved the students, and was “excited” to catch them pranking his home.
“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,” Laura Hughes said.
Police said the incident remains under investigation.
