Death Valley experiencing greatest superbloom in 10 years
(NewsNation) — When most people think of Death Valley, flowers and beauty aren’t the first things that come to mind.
That hasn’t been the case recently.
The area, notorious for being the hottest and driest place in North America, has come to life with its best superbloom of wildflowers in a decade. The National Park Service says the low-elevation flowers are blooming throughout the park and will likely persist till the middle of March, depending on the weather. The higher-elevation flowers will have blooms next month through June.
“This area that’s known basically for hot weather, sand and dirt has just become this amazing landscape of colors,” said David Blacker of the Death Valley Natural History Association. “The smell is just amazing.”
Death Valley National Park officials attributed the superbloom to rainier-than-normal conditions throughout the region last fall and early winter.
“From November through early January, we had about two and a half inches of rain, so we had more than our annual average in just two and a half months,” said Abby Wines, acting deputy superintendent of the park.
Wines added the event has led to an uptick in park visitors in recent days and weeks.
“The next few weeks will be the peak of the bloom,” she added. “By the time the higher elevations are blooming, there will be lots of flowers and they’ll be beautiful.”
