‘May Day Strong’ rallies taking place across US: Why are people protesting?
(NEXSTAR) – Activists across the country are planning to partake in May Day rallies organized to push back against U.S. policies that they believe are favoring “billionaires” over families and everyday workers.
The protests, organized under the “May Day Strong” coalition, are scheduled to take place at thousands of locations throughout the country.
“On May 1, 2026, workers, students, and families rally, march, and take action across the country to demand a nation that puts workers over billionaires,” reads a message from May Day Strong, a network comprised of labor unions and activism groups. Supporters include the National Education Association (NEA) and the Communication Workers of America (CWA) unions, as well as 50501, which had organized anti-Trump protests under the No Kings banner.
A strong opposition to policies enacted by the Trump administration appears to be a common theme among May Day Strong protesters. The group’s demands, as listed on its website, include “tax the rich,” “expand democracy,” and “no ICE” and “no war.”
Some demonstrations are also targeting specific companies or policies. A planned rally in Blackshear, Georgia, is pushing for “No action in Venezuela,” while one that took place in New York City, called “Amazon Delivers ICE,” had targeted Amazon to demand the company cancel its contracts with the Department of Homeland Security.
“Amazon tech helped deport my neighbors,” read a sign carried by one demonstrator on Friday morning.
