Johnson: Democrats ‘brought shame upon their party’ with State of the Union heckling

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Tuesday said Democrats who heckled and shouted at President Trump during the State of the Union “brought shame upon their party and upon themselves.”

Trump’s address was marked by clashes with Democrats over race, crime, immigration and other topics.

Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) repeatedly yelled back at Trump from their seats, before ultimately leaving partway through the speech.

“I mean, the antics were outrageous,” Johnson said. “I came about this close from banging the gavel and having them escorted off the floor. But the president handled it very well. And I thought, you know, let them put that on display.”

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), meanwhile, was escorted out of the chamber as the speech began after holding up a sign that read “BLACK PEOPLE AREN’T APES.”

Green was similarly escorted out of Trump’s address to Congress last year, and later censured by the House.

“Al Green was removed pretty quickly,” Johnson said. “I don’t know if censure is going to be appropriate. I’ll let our colleagues decide that.”

He added, “The point of a censure is to bring someone to the House floor and bring shame upon them for their actions. I think, I think they showed the American people the shame already.”

Johnson said Trump “called out the fraud that the American people are disgusted with, and the fact that the Democrats would not agree with that is pretty shameful.”

“We’re going to make fraud a major theme in the in the midterm elections coming up, because it’s an abuse, a waste of taxpayer funds, and it’s big blue cities and blue states that have abused taxpayer dollars.”
