Raising America: Roblox at center of lawsuit controversy over child safety on platforms

ATLANTA— Roblox is announcing new gaming platform options for underage users on the heels of a reported $12 million settlement with the state of Nevada.

The company has been under pressure as state investigations related to the safety of children using its platforms are underway in Oklahoma, Georgia and South Carolina.

Meanwhile, states such as Louisiana, Iowa, Tennessee, Texas, and Nebraska have filed lawsuits raising similar concerns about child safety and platform accountability. Local governments, including Los Angeles County, have also taken legal action.

Kentucky state Attorney General Russell Coleman also leads a state suing Roblox, and he expressed confidence in an interview with Raising America that his litigation will be successful, even comparing it to the battle ovoid opioids.

“This and the social media platforms, Roblox being one of those, it is the opioid fight of my time in office.” Coleman said. “This, this is the threat now.”

Roblox has come under intense scrutiny over how online platform protects children from exploitation.

“It’s both the content that’s hosted, and it is the lack of a true age verification that Roblox has,” Coleman said.

The Kentucky complaint is filed under consumer protection and child safety laws. It says the platform enables child predators by giving adults an easy avenue to come into contact with minors.
