Letlow looks to push past Cassidy as Louisiana Senate contest moves forward
ATLANTA – Louisiana voters may face confusion at the ballot box Saturday, as House primaries are on hold but the Senate primaries are moving forward after a Supreme Court decision last month.
A ruling that the state’s new House map was an “unconstitutional racial gerrymander” prompted Gov. Jeff Landry (R) to delay those races while new district lines are considered. The case, part of a broader national battle over redistricting, raises questions about whether a new Louisiana map would dilute minority voting power with Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act hit by the ruling.
Early voting has been underway, and voter advocacy groups warn the situation could create low voter turnout because the shifting election calendar adds uncertainty.
Voters are already navigating a high-profile Senate contest. Incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy (R) is seeking another term and faces several Republican primary challengers, including Rep. Julia Letlow and Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming, a former congressman. All three are well-known figures in state politics, but only one — Letlow — has secured President Trump’s endorsement, which could influence voters.
