FCC chair calls for ‘patriotic, pro-America’ broadcaster programs for 250th
The chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is rolling out what the department is calling the “Pledge America Campaign,” which encourages broadcasters to air “patriotic, pro-America content” to celebrate the nation’s history.
The goal of the initiative, the FCC said as part of the announcement it made Friday, is for major broadcasters to put on programming that “celebrates the American journey and inspires its citizens by highlighting the historic accomplishments of this great nation from our founding through the Trump Administration today.”
Suggestions of pro-America content the department made include running public service announcements, short segments, or full specials specifically promoting civic education, inspiring local stories, and American history or starting each broadcast day with “The Star Spangled Banner” or Pledge of Allegiance.
Broadcasters should also consider including segments during regular news programming that highlight local sites that are significant to American and regional history, such as a National Park Service site or airing music by American composers, like John Philip Sousa, Aaron Copland, Duke Ellington or George Gershwin.
“The White House is leading our national celebration of this historic event with the Salute to America 250 Task Force, which calls on the federal government, among others, to mark this momentous occasion,” FCC Chair Brendan Carr said in a statement. “As part of this effort, I am calling on broadcasters to pledge to provide programming that promotes civic education, national pride, and our shared history.”
The FCC said participation in the initiative is voluntary, but Carr suggested the push falls in line with broadcasters’ responsibility to serve the “public interest,” a phrase he has used to question news coverage and commentary on several news networks.
Carr has taken heat from Democrats and media watchdogs over his criticism of major news channels and investigations he has launched into programs and media companies seen as critical of the Trump administration.
The chair earlier this week downplayed criticism sparked by an interview “The Late Show” with host Stephen Colbert pulled with a Texas Senate candidate after the CBS legal counsel advised the show it could face scrutiny from the FCC over its “equal time” rule.
