Some medical marijuana to be reclassified: Will that make cannabis legal nationwide?

(NEXSTAR) – As was roughly anticipated, the Trump administration has moved to partially reclassify marijuana, announcing on Thursday that state-licensed medical marijuana will now be considered a less dangerous drug.

President Trump had expressed support for marijuana reform while campaigning in 2024, even saying that he would vote in favor of an amendment to legalize marijuana in Florida.

Late last year, Trump signed an executive order to speed up the rescheduling process after he was reported to be considering a plan to reclassify marijuana on the national level to a Schedule III drug. During the Biden administration, the Department of Health and Human Services recommended the Drug Enforcement Administration reschedule marijuana. The process stalled, however.

Thursday’s order from Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche will have the largest impact on the 40 states that have legalized medical marijuana. His order calls for an “expedited hearing” to reschedule marijuana and state-licensed marijuana, approved by the FDA, to be reclassified from Schedule I to Schedule III.

Essentially, it eases regulations on state-licensed medical marijuana and provides tax breaks to licensed medical........
