1 death, over 300 burn injuries prompt recall of lithium-ion hand warmers

(NEXSTAR) – More lithium-ion-powered products have been recalled after they allegedly caused a person’s death, more than 300 reports of burn injuries and over a dozen fires.

Roughly 1.5 million OCOOPA rechargeable hand warmers are being recalled due to a “risk of serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards,” the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on Thursday.

The China-based manufacturer of the hand warmers received nearly 1,500 reports of the items overheating. Among those reports was the death of an 83-year-old in San Diego, California. There were also 15 fires caused by the hand warmers, and 350 burn injuries, the recall notice explains.

The hand warmers were sold on Amazon and Walmart’s website as well as Ocoopa.com and Ocoopa.net from September 2018 through May of this year. The model numbers below, found on the bottom of the hand warmers, are impacted:
