On Sunday, Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife Usha announced the birth of their fourth child, Alec Neel Vance, the first child born to a sitting vice president in 156 years.

In a signed statement released on X, Vance said that his wife and newborn son were both healthy, and expressed his thanks to the doctors and staff at Walter Reed Medical Center and in the White House Medical Unit. Alec Neel Vance joins 9-year-old Ewan, 6-year-old Vivek, and 4-year-old Mirabel to bring the Vance family to six total members.

According to the White House Historical Association, the last time a sitting second lady had a child was in 1870, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his wife Ellen had a child while in office. Ulysses Grant was president at the time.

Though it has been extremely uncommon for such high-ranking government officials to have children while serving in such demanding roles, it seems to be a trend in the second Trump administration. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt just had her second child while serving in her current role, and White House Deputy Chief-of-Staff Stephen Miller and his wife just had their fourth.
