In today's world, communities are all too aware of crime and its impact. State governments have won and lost elections on how 'tough' on crime they will be, with 'adult crime, adult time' being the most recent slogan to win an election in Queensland.

Facebook feeds, neighbourhood gossip and political rhetoric have combined to create a perception that crime is out of control. Yet the latest figures from Tasmania Police tell a positive story about policing. I'd argue every time we do a story on police catching an alleged criminal, be it busting a drug ring, seizing illegal guns or large amounts of cash and illicit goods, that it is highlighting the positive work the police do in our community. Many wouldn't see it that way because we aren't explicitly saying, 'gee, the cops are good,' but those stories show that initiatives like Taskforce Raven are working.

According to recent figures from the police, crime across the Northern region has fallen by 7 per cent over the past financial year. Property crime is down more than 10 per cent. Business burglaries have plummeted by more than 30 per cent. Shoplifting is down........
