Kazakh Senate Approves Law Banning ‘LGBTQ’ Propaganda”
On December 18, Kazakhstan’s Senate approved a law that most controversially bans the promotion of “nontraditional” sexual orientations, subjecting violators to fines and possible detention.
The draft law was approved by the Majilis, the parliament’s lower chamber, on November 12.
The Senate was originally scheduled to begin discussions on December 4, but removed the law from its agenda on December 3. Coincidentally, on December 3 Deputy Senate Speaker Zhakip Asanov and other members of parliament met with the European Union Ambassador to Kazakhstan Aleshka Simkich.
As reported by Vlast.kz, Senator Ruslan Rustemov said that the law completely bans LGBT “propaganda,” that is “banning the use of media, literature, entertainment, and other events that promote nontraditional sexual relations and pedophilia.”
