Socialist Cruises in DC Mayoral Election
Janeese Lewis George, a self-described democratic socialist and Howard University Law School graduate, has been elected as the Democratic nominee for mayor of Washington, D.C., by an overwhelming margin.
Lewis George, a current member of the city council, amassed 52% of the vote in a race against former Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie and federal contractor Rini Sampath.
D.C. is one of the most Democrat-heavy cities in America, with only 7% of the city’s vote going to President Donald Trump in 2024. This electoral mismatch will likely ease Lewis George’s path to victory.
If elected, Lewis George, who has been endorsed by the city’s chapter of Democratic Socialists of America, would become the first openly socialist mayor of Washington, D.C.
During her campaign, Lewis George ran on a platform of opposing President Donald Trump’s agenda. While all three candidates ran on similar policy platforms, Lewis George continues to be adamant about opposing Trump’s ambitions for D.C.
Current Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser had welcomed President Donald Trump’s deployment of U.S. National Guard troops in his effort to decriminalize America.
