I’m glad to see Michael Marra enter the leadership contest for the Scottish Labour Party.

The MSP has a sharp intellect and knows the city of Dundee and its problems inside out.

And although if he becomes leader his job will be to look after the whole country, it’ll be no bad thing to have someone who understands the needs of this city and the region.

Along with the Andy Burnham bounce as it’s being called as the new PM overtakes Reform in the polls, Labour has the opportunity for revival both sides of the border.

Burnham and Marra are far better communicators than Keir Starmer and Anas Sarwar, who have thankfully stood down.

In a modern political world, that’s a crucial skill.

Challenges facing Labour Party

Burnham will no doubt come under intense scrutiny shortly if his rhetoric fails to produce concrete results; but he’s hit the spot already with a few announcements like the need for more technical skills as opposed to university degrees, and the pledge to cut VAT from household electricity bills.

Of course he faces significant challenges, among them fixing the small boat crisis and the problem of undocumented arrivals into the country.
