This story is part of “How Does It Work?” — The Better India’s series that takes the everyday things you see, use and rely on, and uncovers the clever technology, design and sustainable thinking that makes them work better. From the objects in your home to the systems around you, we break down the ideas behind them in simple, easy-to-understand language. Because innovation isn’t always about futuristic machines or complicated technology. Sometimes, it’s hiding in the things we use every day.

Early in the morning, a farm can look deceptively simple. Rows of crops stretch across the field, their roots hidden beneath the soil. Water flows through pipes or drip lines, reaching the plants where it is needed.

But how much water is enough?

Too little can leave plants stressed. Too much can waste water and leave the soil excessively wet. For farmers managing large fields, checking every patch of soil and adjusting irrigation manually is not always practical.

This is where smart irrigation systems come in. Instead of watering for a fixed amount of time, these systems can use information from the soil, weather, and plants to decide when irrigation is needed — and, in some systems, when it should stop.

What makes irrigation “smart”?

A traditional irrigation timer may be programmed to turn on a sprinkler at 6 am for 30 minutes, regardless of whether it rained the previous evening.

A smart irrigation controller works differently. It receives information........
