EDITORIAL: In-depth talks needed for consensus on imperial lineage
Discussions revolving around the imperial household system involving the two top officers of both Diet chambers as well as representatives of the various parties will resume for the first time in about a year.
The ruling and opposition parties have held discussions on such issues as how to secure an adequate number of imperial family members for a stable imperial succession in order for the legislature to revise the Imperial House Law.
Amid such moves, the coalition agreement reached in 2025 between the Liberal Democratic Party and Nippon Ishin (Japan Innovation Party) included a sudden change placing top priority on revising the Imperial House Law so that patrilineal male offspring of the imperial line could be adopted into the imperial family.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stressed that point along with constitutional revision in the recent LDP convention.
But strong doubts remain about adopting male offspring of the sons........
