Why lorries and vans keep hitting Swindon railway bridge

A van became stuck under a low railway bridge in Swindon once again, prompting a lot of discussion.

On Friday afternoon, Wiltshire Police were called to Corporation Street after a van was found wedged under the railway bridge with a deflated tyre.

This low bridge is well sign-posted, yet it has been a frequent site for tall vans and lorries getting caught.

Local residents have expressed their frustration over this ongoing issue.

Darren Archer shared his thoughts, asking: "When are they going to put a warning-type barrier that hits the vehicles before they enter the bridge?

"It’s not rocket science."

His comment reflects a common sentiment among residents who believe that more preventative measures should be taken to avoid these incidents.

Mark Simmons offered a different perspective, suggesting that drivers of high-sided vehicles need to take more responsibility.

He said: "How about the people who are driving the high-sided vehicles actually learn to read the height stickers in their vehicles and the road signs."
