Adver readers share memories of Swindon's town centre

Nostalgic photos of Swindon’s town centre sent Adver readers down memory lane.

The latest gallery featured in this newspaper prompted people to share their favourite shops that are no longer around and offer comments on the current state of the area.

Terry Weston said: “Oh look, not a single flat in sight, just loads of happy shoppers.”

Mary Birch said: “McIlroys, British Home Stores, Debenham, M&S, The Spot - I bought a wooden sledge in there that’s still in our garage 60 years old - Chelsea Girl, Woolworths, Wallis, Topshop, the cinemas, Rifleman as it was, The Tabernacle, British Gas showrooms, Radio Rentals, Swindon was brilliant back in the day.”

Richard Clark said: “What do I miss? A department store for a start. Cheltenham still has two.

“Crystals, Cheltenham still has theirs. Ryman, Cheltenham still has theirs.

“Lakeland - we never had one of those thanks to one of our councillors who argued with them when they wanted to........
