Careers in Sports: Fan engagement roles at team level evolving
Over the past three years, I have compiled a weekly list of job openings within the sports industry, and one of the biggest trends I’ve seen is the rise of the fan engagement department.
Fan engagement hasn’t always been a focus for teams, but is now becoming a fixture within leagues and has even trickled down to college athletics, where athletic departments are making these roles a priority.
What is fan engagement and why are teams focusing on it?
When it comes to fan engagement, there are numerous areas the department may concentrate on. This can range from grassroots marketing, theme nights, promotional items and event planning, such as season kickoff events, watch parties and chalk talks.
The role requires a lot of connection between departments, a high level of organization, an ability to pivot quickly and a general love for the fan’s enjoyment.
The tricky part is that fan engagement can get lost in the weeds because it overlaps with so many other departments, including game presentation, ticket sales, event planning and marketing.
