Planned changes to alcohol licensing spark strong opposition

Proposed changes to how communities are informed about alcohol licensing decisions have sparked strong opposition.

The government is considering removing the legal requirement for alcohol licensing notices to be published in printed local newspapers, a move critics say would limit public awareness of decisions affecting their neighbourhoods.

Under the proposals, changes such as opening a new pub or altering the hours of an existing venue would no longer have to be advertised in print, reducing visibility for those who rely on newspapers for local information.

Danny Cammiade, chairman of the News Media Association (NMA), said: "Local news media in print and digital provide a highly trusted and independent environment for public notices to appear in, with local journalists often reporting on the content of the notices.
