Massive mudslide in Mendocino cuts off Highway 1 into Elk
A massive mudslide fully closed Highway 1 near Elk, Calif., on Feb. 25, 2026.
Crews worked overnight to repair and reopen Highway 1 in the North Coast after a storm-triggered landslide battered the roadway. The damage from debris and fallen trees a few miles south of Elk cut off access between the coastal communities in Mendocino County early Wednesday morning.
Highway 1 fully closed at about 7:14 a.m., but Caltrans spokesperson James Seward told SFGATE in an email Thursday morning that maintenance crews were making progress, opening one lane to controlled emergency traffic last night.
